Saturday afternoon was a Funkle rehearsal for an upcoming wedding gig.
Saturday night was the Twilight bike race. I saw exactly two laps of the race. I was too busy enjoying the company of old friends and soaking up the great Athenian prices of beer. Odd pictures to follow later.
Sunday was back in Atlanta working the Ira Glass lecture. I didn't watch a minute of the lecture, but judging by the crowd response I would say he was pretty good. As an added bonus, Ira was nicer than Jesus.

Stream of this
Life has been hectic. I'm not trying to pretend that I'm busier than anyone else, but life, for me has been hectic. But there is a light at the end of this current tunnel and as my Mom would repeatedly tell me growing up; "The road of life is filled with potholes." Or was it?; "That's just a speed bump on the road of life." Or something like that. She also liked to say; "This too shall pass."
As it turned out; she was always right. Everything always worked out somehow, someway or it simply passed. When I started working, I had a really hard time gaining perspective on what battles to fight and which to let go. My then boss handed me Who Moved my Cheese, which forever altered how I approach the idea of change.
My Mom and Dad celebrated 37 years of marriage yesterday and I'm very proud of them. They have always made marriage look easy even though I know it's anything but. The older I get, the more stupefied I become of how they managed to have a home, stay married, and raise three quasi-normal boys. Life is expensive enough, add a kid much less three and I wonder how they did it. It does explain why we ate chicken boiled on the stove so often though.
Sometime next month I'll be an uncle and when I think about it, I can't contain my excitement.
I guess because of the impending birth, death has been a reoccurring thought. More specifically how I don't want to die. Ever. And I really don't want to get any older. I'm very uncomfortable with the thought of aging any older than I already am. I realize it's unavoidable. I enjoy my life and I couldn't say that a few years ago. But I also wouldn't have that perspective without the potholes/speed bumps.
I've wanted to lose a few pounds for a while. So a month ago, I started fixing and eating a salad with every meal. I love salads so this wasn't a big sacrifice. I also starting limiting my portions. These two quasi-easy changes resulted in losing 8 pounds as of today. This is a good start but I want to lose five more. To help this along, I started exercising. Nothing major and no cardio yet, but a few sets of sit-ups, crunches and push-ups every night. You have to start somewhere.

Reunite this
It's time once again to make your plans to head to Athens and enjoy cheap drinks and old friends (or vice versa).
The third annual UGA reunion party will be Saturday, June 16th at 8:00 PM at the Village Idiot (formally known as Rum Runners for you old folks). They have added a spacious room on the third floor that is all ours for the evening.
For safety and convenience (and her pleasure), we have reserved a few rooms downtown at the Game Day Condos. If you want to reserve a room please email me. First come, first served.
This event has grown since it's inception and we have no reason to believe that this year's event won't be better than last year's. At this time, we do not have any plans to honor anyone. This is very likely to change as we get closer, but remember that the driving force and reason for this event always has been and always will be to reconnect with friends that you don't see as often as you would like. Plus cheap beer doesn't suck.
Hope to see you there. Please forward this information to anyone who might be interested in attending.

Control this
I'm still just ranting, move along. This one is for me.
To paraphrase Penn Jillette and Teller; Gun control is Extreme Bullshit.
Yes, I too find it disturbing that my political alignment is in sync with two guys that make a living trying to kill each other using .45 caliber revolvers with laser sights on stage six nights out of the week. But listen to them and then listen to your politicians and see who makes more sense.
The events of Monday were caused by a gun. BULLSHIT!!!
They were caused by a sick and suffering human being. If possessing guns is the real problem; then why are there just a rare few accidental deaths at guns shows and the worst tragedies occur in "gun-free" zones like schools and courthouses? Yes, that is a dismissive statement, but a level of fact exists there.
The events of Monday could have been prevented. BULLSHIT!!!
The inflammatory opinion that major tragedies like Va Tech and Columbine are the cost of freedom; might be correct. Giving up anymore of our rights just to make an attempt at preventing another abomination against humanity, is a step in the wrong direction. Yes, that opinion comes from a selfish place, but what will start with guns, will progress to anything else that could be deemed, by the government, "dangerous". Example. New York City lawmakers entered and then PASSED legislation that banned certain trans-fats from being used in food preparation. Or in other words, a law was passed that made people eat healthier. While living a healthy life style is a smart thing to do; it should be the choice of the individual. Is the next step banning sugar or mandatory exercise?
We are running at full steam towards an alternate universe run by corporations gunning for a global economy wherein the government makes all of our decisions for us. And when we get there, Dwight Schrute/Barney Fife won't have his pepper spray/bullet to defend us.

Al Sharpton this: UPDATE!!!
I was scrolling through the online pictorial of the victims from Monday's attack on ajc.com when smack dab in the middle was an ad for Aya Skin Care. I'm all about the almighty dollar and I am aware that ajc.com is there to make money. But in this instance, is it really necessary to squeeze every dollar out of your advertisers? The only people that should make money off of the dead are funeral homes, florists and heirs.
All of ajc.com's pictorials are sponsored by Wolf Camera, so I'm ok with the initial ad for Wolf, but to interrupt a gallery of the dead for a skin care ad? That's the equivalent of visiting the 9/11 or Oklahoma bombing memorial and being forced to take in a 30 second spot with Mr. Isuzu in the middle of it. It's just fucking rude.
First thing, I called the Vice President VP, Internet Operations for the AJC, Mr. Hyde Post. He wasn't in so I left a very polite voicemail expressing my displeasure of the AJC making money off of the innocent and deceased victims. By the way he can be reached at 404-526-5341 or via email at hpost@ajc.com
Next, I called Aya Skin Care to complain and I was told they were owned by Atlanta Plastic Surgery. APS can be reached at (404) 256-1311. After explaining to the very kind receptionist what I wanted to talk about, she forwarded me to the head of Human Resources, who's name escapes me at the present. She wasn't in either. I left another voicemail.
And that; was my lunch hour.
UPDATE 2:54 PM: The ad has been removed.

What does it matter?
It was probably due to the amount of cold medicine flooding my body; but last night I cried watching the late night reports come in from Blacksburg.
Every news organization is pointing fingers trying to find who's to blame. Is it the administration's fault for not shutting down the campus sooner? Is it the fault of the campus police for not responding sooner? What about the kid? Who raised this kid? Is it the fault of his parents? Is it the fault of society? Well the answer for the last two is the same. The blame rests solely on the shoulders of a college kid that didn't have the to courage, knowledge or ability to ask for help. End of the blame game. But does any of the above really matter when you compare it to the loss of 32 lives?
Here's the selfish part of the post.
Unfortunately, we're all going to be affected by this event for years to come. I think our rights are going to take a hit in the weeks and months ahead and no good can come of that.

Random list this
I have a bad head cold which means I'm crankier than normal but void of any energy to do anything about it. So just to sum up; Fuck Imus for being stupid, Fuck Al Sharpton for only going after white people, Fuck the Democrats for poorly spending my money and Fuck the Republicans for taking away my rights. Yeah, I'm still here.
I will be taking a vacation once hernia-gate is over. Currently on the list; New Orleans, Vegas (it's always on the list), New York, or possibly follow the Skirts on the road for a week. There is currently no front runner so ideas for other locations is welcome.
I did have one over-the-counter drug induced thought today. It's an idea for an episode of Mythbusters. The question; is it physically possible to propel yourself into the air, even just an inch, using nothing but your own naturally produced flatulence?

Get this for Free
A car salesman once said to me;
"I'm sure you didn't get up this morning thinking; Wow, I hope I get to haggle with the car salesman today."
Actually, I did. I like haggling, it makes me happy.
Ever since stumbling across Bargainist and Consumerist a few months ago, I've become even more obsessed. In the past few weeks I received free samples of Folger's coffee, Snuggle clothes and Palmolive dish detergents, and on and on and on. I've used check-out codes posted there to receive $25 dinner gift certificates for $4 and $10 certificate for $1.40. Yes it is that easy.
Today, via Consumerist, there is another such freebie and while I can't use it, I know 50% of you can. My only question; what is the difference between "regular unscented" and "super unscented". Here you go.

Inspired by The Office and general bordom, I faxed the following letter to the UGA Bandroom at 10:30 AM.
Dear Trey,
At approximately 11:00 this morning, someone will contaminate the
coffee. More instructions to follow.
Sincerely,
Future Trey

Listen to this
Don Imus can say whatever the hell he wants to. He can also say whatever he wants to on public broadcast radio and television waves with the exception of; (everyone together now) shit, piss, fuck, cunt, cocksucker, motherfucker and tits. The first amendment guarantees him the right to say whatever idiotic and insulting thing he wants to. Don't like what he says? Turn the channel.
And until "urban" radio cleans up their racially degrading insults, Jesse and Al need to shut the hell up. It's OK for "these" stations over here to do it, but if this "white" radio station over here slips up all hell breaks loose.

How to annoy me
We just met for the first time and you're about to audition for So You Think You Can Dance. At what point did you think it would be OK for you to hug me?
To give credit where credit is due, I ripped this new reoccurring category from Dooce. The title is all her, the content will be all me.

Can't eat this
Found via Consumerist. On April 17th Ben and Jerry's will be giving away ice cream cones between 12:00 and 8:00 PM. I got really excited about this until I realized that they don't make a sugar-free option. Damn you Ben! Damn you Jerry!
Bet this
I have no idea why we don't get the Jimmy Kimmel show in the Atlanta. I hear it's quite funny. Example. Will Forte told Amy Poehler that he would pay her $300 for each time she said his name during her recent appearance on the Jimmy Kimmel show. She knocked it out of the park to the tune of $15,000.

Wait on this
Why is it that when you are stuck in a waiting room (having your oil changed, doctor's office, hospital, purchasing tires) the television is always tuned to the lowest form of entertainment? Examples; People's Court, Jerry Springer, Judge Judy. Further more, why do none of us take an initiative to change the channel to something less stupefying?
Are we really concerned about offending someone who might be engrossed about the outcome of case number 3677298, Griffin versus Thomas? Tammy Griffin is suing Marc Thomas for damages that Marc caused in a drunken stupor. Marc was trying to stop a ceiling fan with his tongue and in the process, spilled a glass of box red wine on her new faux leopard skin rug. In my opinion, if Tammy had just stayed in school, she wouldn't have had to take that job dancing at Tip-Tops where she met Marc.
Not that I was paying attention.

This article sums up my exact feelings about this season of 24.
This is Sad Kermit, which I find twisted but funny.
This is Sad Kermit covering Johnny Cash's cover of Nine Inch Nails' Hurt. (NSFW)

Buy this
This is an odd coincidence. The same day that Apple and EMI launch DRM-free music for $1.29 per song, you can buy three $15 itunes cards and get a fourth $15 card for free from Best Buy(found off Bargainist). Mathmatically, this deal covers the increased cost for free.
